History of Pilates

Pilates is a unique method of body conditioning devised by Joseph Pilates in the mid 1920s, it is completely natural and drug free. In its simplest form it requires no expensive or bulky equipment, and can be practiced in the comfort of your own home, gym, or workplace.

During the 1940s Joseph Pilates adapted his original system, giving his name to a series of exercises designed to rebuild the bodies muscles and improve the health of hospitalised and bedridden patients.

So impressive were the results, that professional athletes and physical therapists soon took up his methods. Today Pilates is regularly practised by sportspeople, performers, and medical practitioners from all disciplines, including dancers, gymnasts, cricketers, physiotherapists, and even the New Zealand Rugby team.
